Get your doors
and shutters regularly serviced
The
regular service and maintenance of workplace doors, roller shutters and
grilles is a legally required duty by all employers.
Doors include external doors, fire doors, doors that are part of an escape route, automatic doors, power and electric doors.
There are 5 regulations in force that cover the employers obligation, which are binding on the employer, who has a duty to safeguard the health & safety of their employees and visitors to their sites:
- Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1992
- Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
- Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997
- Construction (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulation 1996
- Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

All doors (manual and automatic) and security shutters should be subject to
a regular maintenance regime that is recorded and preferably carried out by
competent or approved operators to suppliers standards.
There are also real benefits to having your doors and shutters regularly maintained and serviced, including:
- Prolongs the life
of the doors and shutters
- It keeps doors and shutters in a safe and efficient condition
- Helps prevent potential downtime
- It can help prevent premature replacement and identify when a product
should be replaced for safety reason
- It can help
ensure the security integrity of the shutter, grille or door that forms
part of the premises security measures.
Penalties for not complying with these regulation can include prohibition
and enforcement notices, large fines (up to £5,000) and imprisonment (up to
2 years).
